Firefighters called to barn blaze on Beccles industrial estate

Twenty fire crews have been on the scene of a blaze in a barn on an industrial estate in Beccles overnight.

The fire on Ellough Road was reported by a member of the public at about 10.24pm last night – with appliances from Lowestoft, Haverhill, Beccles, Southwold, and Woodbridge among those called to the scene.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the building was used as a refuse store, which she said was part of the reason why so many fire crews were sent as it was not known what rubbish was involved.

"We had 20 pumps go out but not all 20 were there at one time," she added.

There were reports on social media of "big plumes of smokes and some loud bangs" from the industrial estate last night.

The spokeswoman said no one was hurt and the fire was under control, while around six crews remained on scene this morning to dampen the area down.

Police had also been on scene during the night to close the road.

Meanwhile, there had been a call to local residents last night to shut their windows due to the smoke.
