Second phase of £1.8m upgrade work at Tollgate Triangle in Bury St Edmunds begins today

Work on a £1.8 million upgrade scheme at a key Bury St Edmunds junction is ‘progressing well’, an authority has said, as its next phase kicks into gear.

Suffolk Highways has been conducting works at the Tollgate Triangle, to replace the current one-way clockwise system to enable two-way traffic in all directions, since September 29.

The first phase, which included the removal of traffic islands, finished ahead of schedule.

A spokesperson for Suffolk Highways said the project was ‘progressing well’, with work to widen the inner gyratory beginning today, solely taking place during the day.

Traffic management is in place 24/7 with work set to continue into the New Year.

Only the inner lane will be closed, allowing motorists to travel clockwise using the outer one.

In a bid to ease congestion, traffic will also be able to turn right from Mildenhall Road onto Tollgate Lane, with temporary signage in place.

However, the B1106 remains closed at all time for those travelling to Bury at all times.

Traffic is being diverted via the A134 and A1101.

Work will pause during the Christmas period and is expected to finish in January.

The overall project is expected to be complete during summer 2026.
