16-year-old arrested in connection with vandalism to Bury St Edmunds businesses with windows smashed

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a spate of vandalism in Bury St Edmunds last week which saw four businesses’ windows smashed.

Police were called to incidents at 10pm on Thursday – with Molly Carpets and Bury Fish and Chips, on St Andrew’s Street South, and Mountain Warehouse and Poundland, in Cornhill, having their windows smashed.

Howard Jones, owner of Molly Carpets, which has been in the town for three years, posted about the incidents on Facebook on Friday to see if anyone had any information about it.

“Yes, I have insurance that covers things, but I may get hit with an excess which will come out of my pocket,” he added.

“As a business and the other businesses our insurance will go up – and who pays for that?

“This happened Thursday, the insurance company is taking its time. I’m still waiting for quotes.

“The plus side was that the CCTV captured it. Justice is needed but the prisons are full.”

He is unsure how much it will cost to get the window fixed, but the signage may also need to be replaced which is an additional cost.

The boy was interviewed and has been bailed pending further inquiries.
