Stowmarket £3.6m theatre revamp 'progressing well' despite coronavirus, say council chiefs

A theatre redevelopment is on course for completion following the addition of two additional auditoria and a new café area.

The Regal Theatre in Stowmarket is undergoing a £3.6m revamp which will see it house three modern cinema screens, improved audio-visual experience, as well as a new front of house, café and bar area.

Works are also being undertaken to restore and preserve many of the original features of the existing building, built in 1936.

The Regal Theatre Project is being led by Stowmarket Town Council and Mid Suffolk District Council and forms part of a 'wider vision for the development of Stowmarket'.

This aim is to attract more visitors to Stowmarket for shopping, leisure activities, bars and restaurants.

The councils say despite the coronavirus pandemic, project managers, Northmores, and main contractor Mixbrow, have maintained progress on site with a significant proportion of the structures, electrics and utilities having now been installed.

The final elements of the project including new seating, cinema screens and interior design features are due to be completed early in 2021.

Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk District Council deputy leader and cabinet member for economic growth said: “It is great to see the developments at the Regal, especially given the exceptional circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic.

Once completed, the Regal Theatre will be a fantastic asset for the residents in Stowmarket, as well as attracting visitors to enjoy both the day and night-time economies that that town has to offer.

Cllr Keith Scarff, Stowmarket Town Mayor said: “This is a flagship project for Stowmarket and I am absolutely delighted with the progress that has been made in 2020.

"The Regal is a much-loved local amenity and I know many local residents are looking forward to its re-opening in the first half of 2021.”

Over Christmas, the Regal on the Road at the John Peel Centre, will be showing a range of festive family films.
