Awards success for Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Bury St Edmunds

The £30million Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Bury St Edmunds has taken two more awards in its first year of operation.

The centre in Fornham Road, which is jointly run by West Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council, last week picked up two titles at the National Construction Awards held by the Institute of Civil Engineers, East of England.

On the one year anniversary of its commission, the site won the National Construction Award for Best Community Engagement and a Merit Award for Physical Achievement.

There was further success at the online ceremony, with contractor Morgan Sindall shortlisted for their work.

Judges were impressed the project was delivered on time and on budget. They were also taken with the reuse shop, which is central to the centre, and also the site being engineered on one level to aid user mobility.

West Suffolk Council leader Councillor John Griffiths said: "I would like to thank and congratulate all those who came together from the community, the council and the contractors to collaborate on delivering the project.

"This success is shared by many, not least Morgan Sindall Construction in recognition of their commitment."

The hub also one of five projects to receive recognition from the East of England Institute of Civil Engineers.
