See inside renovated former school house in West Stow, near Bury St Edmunds and Mildenhall, that inspired Peter Pan author J M Barrie
A renovated former school house with a woodland sanctuary and sauna is now on sale with Savills with a guide price of £1,750,000.
The Old School House, in West Stow, near Bury St Edmunds, was a small-one classroom school when headmistress ‘Miss Cole’ befriended Scottish writer J M Barrie, who wrote the children’s classic Peter Pan in 1911.
Barrie was walking in the school's gardens in 1899 when he was fascinated by a gnarled Scots Pine with exposed roots, so he sketched it.
The drawing was passed onto his illustrator Arther Rackham, who made it into the illustration of The Lost Boys’ (characters in Peter Pan) underground hideout.
Property agent Katy Stephenson, associate director in the residential sales team at Savills in Suffolk, said: “Dating from the 19th century, The Old School House has been meticulously enhanced to an exceptionally high standard by the current owners, blending historical and period elegance with modern luxury and conveniences.
“I also particularly love its surroundings, with the pathways through the trees and strategically placed seating areas creating a perfect sanctuary. This is a very special property.”
The current owners of Old School House have made several structural and aesthetic renovations to the home.
Some of the changes include a new heating system, a new roof section above the old school room as well as new bathrooms and a kitchen.
The ground floor accommodation starts with an entrance porch opening into an expansive hallway which flows into the reception hall, before leading to a handsome drawing room.
The drawing room features high vaulted ceilings and original wood windows, now enhanced with double glazing, which makes the room very light. It also benefits from a wood-burning stove and French doors.
Along the hallway is the internal steam room, complete with an adjacent walk-in rainfall shower.
Upstairs, the large landing accesses all five bedrooms and features three large electronic skylights.
The principal bedroom is a light and airy room with built-in wardrobes, an en suite bathroom and bi-folding doors opening on to a balcony overlooking the garden.
Old School House is approached through electric cast iron gates and across a sweeping driveway that meanders through a wild garden and wooded area.
The wrap-around garden is predominantly laid to lawn and adorned with additional shrubs, while a natural wild garden named The Dell boasts vegetable planter boxes and a greenhouse.
To the back of the house lies a terraced dining area, perfect for alfresco dining and making a delightful hideaway.
Another outdoor dining area, nestled within the wooded area near the house, features its own Kadai fire pit.
The gym, situated in a separate cabin, includes a sauna and ice bath with panoramic views of the surrounding fields and countryside.
