The Corn Exchange in Bury St Edmunds named one of the four best by a Wetherspoons expert
The Corn Exchange in Bury St Edmunds is one of the best Wetherspoons – according to a man who will soon complete a four-year mission to visit every single pub from the chain in the British Isles.
David Bingham, 60, will finish the ‘longest pub crawl in history’ on Wednesday, with a whopping £30,000 bar tab – including travel fares, drinks and overnight stays.
Of the 875 Wetherspoons, Bury St Edmunds' Corn Exchange stood out as one of his four favourites.
The retired forklift driver said: “I love going in Wetherspoons pubs because they are all different buildings.
“Many of them are old fire stations, post offices, churches and other beautiful sites.
“I call them boxes of fun because you never know where they will be."
The Corn Exchange is a grade one-listed building that first opened to sell corn and host public functions in 1862.
Wetherspoons began refurbishing the building in 2011, but left the outside of the building mostly untouched.
The other top pubs on David’s list were the Royal Victoria Pavilion in Kent’s Ramsgate, the Winter Gardens in Harrogate, and the Caley Picture House in Edinburgh.
He continued: “It’s been a wonderful journey across Britain. I’ve visited so many places which I would never have gone to if I’d not been checking off the pubs.
“I call myself a pub-spotter because I like to go down my directory of Spoons pubs and cross them off one by one.
“I daresay it’ll be strange to finally finish the challenge but I’m keen to revisit some of the ones I went to in the early days.
David often visits dozens of pubs each day, but only has pints in the best ones. He will tick off the last Wetherspoons when he sinks a pint at The Flying Horse on Wednesday.
