Charity leisure trusts Abbeycroft and South Suffolk to merge

Abbeycroft Leisure and South Suffolk Leisure are to merge, after the move was approved on Thursday.

The merger of the leisure trusts, which manage facilities in partnership with St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Forest Heath District Council and Babergh District Council, was approved by Babergh, which owns the buildings housing Kingfisher Leisure Centre and Hadleigh Swimming Pool and commissions leisure services.

Cllrs Jo Rayner and Andy Drummond, cabinet members for leisure and culture at St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath, said: "All our councils have a priority to help people be more active and the demand for amenities and services that support healthier lifestyles is set to grow. This merger will help meet that demand."

Warren Smyth, Abbeycroft Leisure chief executive, said: “We have been working with South Suffolk Leisure informally for some time so it makes sense we come together on a formal basis.”

The new trust, called Abbeycroft Leisure, will start operations from October 1.
