Aldi opens new store in Stowmarket and arranges Chilton Community Primary School assembly with Olympic medallist Gemma Gibbons
Supermarket giant Aldi opened a new store in a Suffolk town today and arranged for an Olympic medallist to talk to school pupils as part of the celebrations.
Store manager Matt Gilson welcomed customers at 8am to the Stowmarket store, in Gipping Way, which has employed 25 people from the community.
To celebrate the opening, the company arranged for judoka and Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons to deliver a virtual assembly to pupils at Chilton Community Primary School.
It was part of the supermarket’s healthy eating initiative Get Set to Eat Fresh and Gemma talked about the importance of exercise and believing in yourself.
Pupil Anna Lejtenyi also won a £20 gift voucher after the school took part in a poster competition to show what healthy eating meant to pupils.
Mr Gilson said the opening was 'wonderful' and it was 'lovely' to welcome customers.
"I look forward to meeting more of the community in the coming weeks," he said.
"I’m also thrilled that we’ve been able to support Chilton Community Primary School through our partnership with Team GB."
Gemma added: “I’ve had a fantastic time speaking with the children at Chilton Community Primary School.
"It was great to talk to them about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to plan and prepare meals as a family.
"Hopefully, I’ve also managed to inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports."
