Suffolk sunflower fields in Rougham and Horringer, near Bury St Edmunds, and Thwaite, near Eye, are set to open for the 2024 summer season





Sunflower fields across Suffolk are in bloom and preparing to welcome their first visitors of the season.

Established sunflower fields in Rougham and Thwaite are returning this year, while there is also a new kid on the block opening for the first time, in the shape of Horringer Sunflower Field.

Read on for all the information you might need if you plan to pick sunflowers this summer.

Rougham Sunflowers, near Bury St Edmunds, opens today at 9am.

The Sow Lane field, just off junction 45 of the A14 – IP30 9XH / what3words: Madder.quote.snapper – launched in 2021 and has seen visitor numbers grow each year.

With more than two hectares of sunflowers, there will be plenty of blooms to cut and take home during its 2024 season.

Sunflowers start at £2 per stem, with secateurs available on loan for a refundable deposit. Pre-cut bunches of wildflowers will also be for sale. Payment by card is preferable, although cash is accepted.

Activities for children include a big bale pyramid, maze, bug hunt challenge and sandpits.

There are also several featured areas for photographs.

Rougham Sunflowers will be open daily for roughly three weeks, 9am-5pm.

Admission and parking are free, picnics are welcome, while food and drink is available to buy on site.

Toilet facilities, including an accessible toilet with baby change unit, are also available.

Two sundowners evenings will be hosted by Wrights at the site for the first time this year.

On August 9 and 16, the field will be open from 5-9.30pm for evenings of cooking over fire, golden hour in the flowers and a chilled summer evening atmosphere. Sundowner tickets cost £22.38, including food.

Horringer Sunflower Field, near Bury, will open for the first time this year on Wednesday.

With plenty of blooming flowers and a host of photo opportunities, Horringer Sunflower Field is hoping to be a hit when it opens its gates on Wednesday.

With 10 acres of sunflowers, including a sunflower trail and pick your own patch, the site also has activities for children, including ever-popular sandpits.

Picnicking is welcome, while there will also be tea, coffee and cakes available to buy.

Secateurs are available to borrow with a £3 refundable deposit. Sunflowers cost £2 a stem or seven stems for £10. Cash and card accepted.

The field will open Wednesdays to Sundays, 9am-5pm, for three to four weeks, with the end date to be confirmed.

The field is located just outside Horringer on the A134 heading towards Chedburgh – what three words location: fiction.snowy.asserts – enter through the metal gates and park, before walking down to the field entrance.

Helpful information: No dogs are allowed; picnics are allowed (but no alcohol); wear suitable footwear, particularly if it has been raining; toilets available on site; disabled parking is near the field entrance and children must be supervised.

The field will be closed on bad weather days – keep an eye on social media.

Frogs Farm, just off the A140 in Thwaite, near Eye (post code IP23 7ED) is poised to open for its fifth year of sunflowers on Friday.

A statement from the farm this week said: “The sun has done wonders for our sunflower maze and they are really coming along nicely.

“We are hopeful we will be able to open on Friday, August 9, but please keep an eye on our social media pages for updates.”

Entrance is £7.50 per person with under threes free. There is no need to book tickets in advance.

Ticket prices include two mazes with different trails – both with Suffolk-themed designs.

The site also boasts stamp and picture trails, a huge bale mountain, pedal tractors, sandpit, snake scramble, towers and walkways, pick your own wildflowers and refreshments.

Frogs Farm has sheltered and open picnic areas, toilets, a free hard-standing car park, stunning views and photo opportunities, is fully-fenced, accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome to the farm but are not allowed in the mazes themselves.

Frogs Farm will also be hosting sundowner events – with music, food, drinks and ‘views for days’ – on Friday evenings during August.
