A consultant clinical psychologist has spoken of her pride after collecting an MBE for her outstanding contribution to improving mental health and wellbeing among young people.

Dr Beth Mosley, who is with Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), travelled to Buckingham Palace on Thursday, July 7, alongside daughter Eva, 13, to collect her award from the Duke of Cambridge.

Dr Mosley was recognised in the New Year Honours for her work with young people across Suffolk, and for leading a project to develop a programme of online workshops during the pandemic to give parents extra support with their children’s mental health. Together with her team, she also delivered mental health packages to help schools support their staff and students as they returned after the COVID-19 lockdown.

It comes after Dr Mosley was one of the first clinical psychologists in the country to be appointed to a full-time position in a school when she joined Thurston Community College in Thurston, near Bury St Edmunds, to support students and staff with their mental health.

Her work has made such an impact that it paved the way for scores of other mental health clinicians to work in Suffolk’s schools, including NSFT’s Psychology in Schools and Mental Health Support Teams.

“The day was amazing and one of the best of my life,” said Dr Mosley, who lives in Bury St Edmunds. “I was with all of the people I love the most and who were all so proud of me, and thought it was really special that my daughter was able to see me receive the MBE.

“The Duke of Cambridge was very authentic, personable and relaxed, and was very interested in my work. I told him about the programme of online workshops our team developed during the pandemic to support young people and their parents and carers, and our drive to take additional help into the community and closer to families.

“It was lovely to meet so many incredible people who were also receiving investitures, including lots of women. I hope that the day inspired my daughter and helped to show her you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it."
