Rattlesden artisan couple launch Selfish Design pop-up furniture shop in Bury St Edmunds with workshops to share their skills
A pair of artisans who produce bespoke and handmade furniture have opened a pop-up shop – and are sharing their skills with customers in a series of workshops.
Partners Jess Walters and Joe Kirton have brought their company, Selfish Design, to St John’s Street, in Bury St Edmunds, to showcase their wares which are made mainly from hand dyed concrete and acrylic plaster.
Their products, including coffee tables and side tables, outdoor furniture and a range of accessories, are fully customisable and they are running workshops in store, which is open until the end of this month.
The workshops focus on making terrazzo coasters and marbled pots.
Joe said they wanted to open the pop-up to engage with customers.
“It’s nice to do something a bit physical and away from the world of the internet and posting on Instagram which is something we have to do but it’s nice to deal with people,” he said.
With 20 years of experience working in the art world, making sculpture and furniture for international clients, the pair wanted to get out of London and redirect their skills to their new venture.
They launched a workshop at their Rattlesden home four years ago and Joe, who has worked in prop and model making for TV and film, said their aim was to create quality affordable products which were customisable to involve customers in the design process.
The workshops are every Saturday.
