Blast from past in Bury St Edmunds as sign for long-lost supermarket Key Markets uncovered at former Co-op in Mildenhall Road

Residents in Bury St Edmunds have been given a blast from the past after the sign of a long-lost supermarket was uncovered.

Branding for Key Markets can be seen on the former Co-operative Food, in Mildenhall Road.

The supermarket, which was Key Markets in 70s and Gateways in the 80s, closed on August 19 last year after the expiry of its lease.

Its 0.77 acre car park, with space for more than 100 vehicles, is being marketed by Birchall Steel Consultant Surveyors.

Birchall Steel said the site lends itself to a wide variety of alternative uses including open/self-storage and development, subject to necessary consents being obtained.

On the rates, it said the car park is currently assessed with the former supermarket and the assessment is due to be apportioned.

In March, Cllr Diane Hind, who represents the Tollgate ward for West Suffolk Council and Bury St Edmunds Town Council, said she had contacted the property consultants for the former Co-op building.

At the time, Cllr Hind, who is also town mayor, was told they planned to re-let the building.
