Bury Quakers hold silent vigil against renewal of Trident nuclear missile system

Bury St Edmunds Quakers organised a silent vigil to protest against renewal of the Trident nuclear missile system.

About 30 people took part in the ‘witness to the testimony to peace and equality’ outside Moyse’s Hall on Sunday to promote their belief that to ‘rely on the possession of nuclear weapons as a deterrent is faithless, while to use them would be a sin’.

Jill Segger, a member of Bury Quaker Meeting, said the renewal of Trident at an initaial cost of £31 billion rising to more than £100 billion at a time when vulnerable people are suffering from economic austerity is ‘contrary to the testimony to equality’.

She added: “Some people were very supportive and one or two people were quite argumentative but we talked to them quietly and stated our viewpoint. We all felt the vigil was a very worthwhile thing to do.”
