Bury St Edmunds' Hannah Gregory sails through to MasterChef knock-out stages after 'really clever' vegan fish and chips creation

A Bury St Edmunds woman who is a contestant on the current series of MasterChef has made it through to the knock-out stages of the competition.

Hannah Gregory, 33, was one of six chefs battling it out in last night's quarter final to win a place in the next round.

The episode, which aired on BBC One at 8pm, saw chefs set a challenge by food critic William Sitwell to create an entirely plant-based dish.

Hannah's creation was vegan 'fish' - made by frying tofu wrapped in seaweed - and triple cooked chips complete with mushy peas, curry sauce, tartare sauce and pickled onions.

"My best friend is vegan and the one thing she misses most is fish and chips," said Hannah, who watched the episode with her boyfriend John last night.

"When we got the brief I was trying to be creative and think outside the box."

Hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace raved about the dish, which Gregg said gave 'all the flavours of the chip shop' and described it as 'really clever and really good'.

John added: "I think it is a really good dish."

The tofu 'fish' wasn't a favourite of William Sitwell, who described the experience of eating it as 'swimming through a tofu nightmare'.

"It was one of those moments where if I didn't laugh, I'd have cried," said Hannah.

"It was quite brutal but it was really great that Gregg and John challenged him on it. Some of their comments weren't shown in the edit of the episode but they really championed the fact that I'd thought outside the box and been creative."
