'Businesses will suffer': Mildenhall councillor and business owner urges Suffolk County Council to solve flooding issues in town

Businesses in Mildenhall will suffer if issues of repeated flooding are not solved, according to a district councillor.

Cllr Andy Neal owns a cleaning supplies business on the industrial estate, in James Carter Road, and has reported the issue to Suffolk County Council on 'numerous occasions'. He says it has been an ongoing problem in the town for 25 years.

Mr Neal took pictures of the flooding in the town on Tuesday afternoon following heavy rainfall in the area.

However, after approaching the council, he was told that it was not a priority area.

"It has been reported a multitude of times and you get nowhere with it," he said.

"I appreciate the council has budget problems, but unless the house is flooded they do not respond.

"It is coming over the kerbs, business will suffer [eventually]."

Although Cllr Neal highlighted the area on the industrial estate, he said that multiple areas in the town suffer the same problems. He said that one lady in the town has to put sandbags down in front of her home every time it floods.

He added: "They just can't keep up with it. It is not just in Mildenhall, either.

"People getting to and from work [by walking], they are getting soaked. Not everyone drives. I feel for people, I really do.

"There needs to be a regular maintenance system."

Suffolk County Council has been approached for comment.
