Our Bury St Edmunds BID’s VE Day anniversary trail brings the fun to town centre
A free family-friendly activity trail in Bury St Edmunds is proving a hit with residents and visitors alike as people take to the town centre in search of hidden items.
Organised by Our Bury St Edmunds Business Improvement District (BID), the VE Day-themed trail is part of commemorations to mark 80 years since Victory in Europe Day — the day that signalled the official end of the Second World War in Europe on May 8, 1945.
Launched on Monday, April 7, the interactive trail has already proved popular with more than 55 town centre businesses getting involved.
Each participating shop or café is displaying a World War II-themed object in its window, encouraging passers-by to take a closer look.
Items on display include a wartime ration book, an air raid shelter sign, military medals and a newspaper declaring the end of the war, along with others waiting to be found.
Mark Cordell, chief executive of Our Bury St Edmunds BID, said: “Our town centre trails are always popular especially those with an historical theme.
“This year is a very important commemoration of the ending of World War II and we wanted to reflect that with this trail and other activities we have planned later in the year.
“I’m grateful to all the local businesses who are supporting the trail.
“It’s a perfect family activity giving an opportunity to visit different parts of the town centre and can be done over a number of days.
“We are offering three Our Bury St Edmunds Town Centre Gift Cards of £100, £75 and £50 as the prizes.”
The competition, which has been supported by The Suffolk Regiment Museum, will run until Sunday, June 1.
