West Road Church in Bury St Edmunds invites all to put angels in windows

A church is inviting all to create an angel, or 'be an angel' and help with feeding those going hungry in the run up to Christmas.

West Road Church & Westley Community Church in Bury St Edmunds is holding the appeal in the run-up to its online Christmas Eve carol service, which organisers joke continues the saintly theme as 'angels love to sing'.

David Oakley, senior pastor, said: "Angels played a key role in the first Christmas as they brought light, worship and good news to people from a variety of backgrounds.

"We at West Road and Westley Community Church, in Bury St Edmunds want your help to do the same in 2020 with our Angels of Bury Christmas initiative."

The project begins at the start of December and continues until January 3.

The 'create' part invites households to put their homemade angels in their windows, much like many did with pictures of rainbows during the first lockdown.

Mr Oakley said: "Once your angel is ready, we want the whole world to see your angelic creation, so photograph your angel all lit up and post it on social media - tagging @westroadchurchbse and #angelsofbury.

"There may be a prize or two for the best displayed."

Church youth leader Alice Petersen and children's worker Emma Malcolm have made videos on YouTube detailing how to make a large angel and a small angel.

There will also be a mural of an angel painted next to West Road Church which passers-by can take a selfie with.

The Christmas Eve carol service will be streamed at 6pm on December 24 the church's YouTube channel.

The second part of the project is aimed at helping support the lonely, vulnerable, and hungry throughout winter with food and financial support.

West Road and Westley has a £10,000 target for donations to help keep its Foodbank topped up to deliver to those in need. Donations can be made here.

Mr Oakley added: "We do not want children, the elderly and vulnerable people going hungry in our town and feeling isolated - especially this Christmas.

"No donation is too small and every penny counts as together we can be angels supporting those in need in our town this Christmas time."
