Community drop-in in Stowmarket is proving popular
A community drop-in group for people to socialise and play board games in Stowmarket is proving popular with more activities on the horizon.
When 'Monday Community Brew' launched in February at Stowmarket United Reformed Church, just two people stayed for the duration but, after the sessions moved from fortnightly to weekly, the group now attracts 22 regulars.
Organised by Jam Community Pot in conjunction with the church, the group meets on Mondays from 10.30am to 12.30pm to socialise, play board board games and enjoy tea and cake.
Jam, run by Michelle Frost and Jill Roberts, also holds a Christmas Day lunch at the church.
Michelle said: "The people we have on Christmas Day aren't just isolated, vulnerable and lonely at Christmas and we had a cupboard full board games. To us Monday was a good day after a long weekend.
"It's quite like a little family now because we all know each other and we're having a laugh.
"It's informal, we're quite competitive at a game of Uno but it's so friendly and open and we've got a good little team of volunteers."
On Sunday, the group enjoyed a trip to Lowestoft and will see the pantomime at Bury St Edmunds' Theatre Royal over the festive period.
There is also an afternoon tea dance on Saturday, August 18 from 1pm to 3pm which anyone is welcome to attend.
Michelle said they are also exploring the idea of becoming a lunch club.
