Fishwick Corner improvements, in Thurston, near Bury St Edmunds, welcomed - but concerns still remain
Junction improvements at a notorious accident blackspot have received a positive response from motorists and residents – but concerns still remain.
Andrew Ridgeon, who founded a campaign group to press for infrastructure improvements ahead of a raft of housing developments in Thurston, said overall, people approved of the new staggered junction at Fishwick Corner, but were still familiarising themselves with the new layout.
Bloor Homes has now completed the junction ahead of a 210-home development off nearby Beyton Road, which was a condition set by Mid Suffolk District Council planners.
It replaces a notorious crossroads which has been the scene of numerous accidents over the last few years and which nearby residents described as ‘lethal’.
Mr Ridgeon said: “Overall, comments so far have been positive – and that it works.
“People are still familiarising themselves with the new layout, but visibility emerging from New Road is vastly improved, the curved sections are comfortably navigable. Accident risk should be reduced significantly.”
However, he added: “No improvements have been made to visibility for traffic emerging from the Rougham direction, out from the woodland.
“This poses the same risk as before and, as we know, has been the cause of accidents when vehicles traveling from the Pokeriage Corner direction have collided with those emerging from the Rougham direction.
“Speeding along Mount Road leading into the new junction continues and the cycleway created along the closed section of New Road emerges at the same location of the original crossroads.
“This worries me as speed restriction along this section has not been addressed.
“When creating this kind of cycle access, one wonders what standards were set when considering speeding traffic leading into this crossover.”
Concerns have also been raised following a number of accidents at nearby Pokeriage Corner, which is also due to be improved next year by the developer.
