A cottage in Barningham has been left completely gutted by a fire which engulfed the roof late last night.

Cherry Tree Cottage, on pound corner, has been left as a blackened structural shell, with a chimney fire having quickly spread to the thatched roof at around 9pm last night.

The fire service was called at 9.22pm, with 17 appliances attending the blaze, which took hold on the roof of the building within minutes.

The two occupants were able to flee the building unharmed and did not require hospital treatment.

Police closed the road adjacent to the property and fire crews attended the incident until 1.21am this morning.

Little remains of the roof of the Barningham property and there has been a partial structural collapse.

This incident comes in the wake of a fire in Bury St Edmunds town centre one week ago.
