Organisers 'absolutely devastated' as Bardfest is postponed until 2022

A two-day family music festival in Bardwell has been postponed until 2022 after organisers feared covid restrictions could scupper the event at the last minute.

Bardfest was due to take place on July 2 and 3, with a host of bands already signed up to perform. Originally, organisers hoped the event would be able to go ahead in near-normal circumstances with restrictions due to ease further on June 21.

However Bardfest committee member Gary Howard said on Monday the ‘difficult’ decision to postpone was taken due to the event’s proximity to June 21 and the uncertainty surrounding any impact of new Covid-19 variants.

“Over the last week it has become clear that the amount of uncertainty regarding the relaxation of lockdown measures on June 21 has heightened significantly. Our event is at the precipice and we cannot be sure we can give our customers the weekend they deserve,” said Gary.

“We thought people would be very keen to release the shackles and enjoy Bardfest but we couldn’t guarantee we would be able to put on a weekend as good as previous events.

“General public confidence is such people are nervous about booking anything and having faith in it going ahead.

“We hope people realise we are doing this for all the right reasons and to make sure we give them the best possible weekend next year.”

Gary said the entire committee was ‘absolutely devastated’ but added that the financial risk involved in staging such a large event also played a part in the decision.

“It’s not like we are doing this for commercial gain, it is to raise funds for the village. These things cost an enormous amount,” said Gary.

“The bands involved have agreed to postpone to the same time next year, so they’ll be back for that.

“We hope to be able to confirm some other names for the 2022 line-up soon so people can put it in their diaries and prepare for it.

“We are absolutely determined to put on the best show for the following year. Hopefully it will be a different world by then.”

Bardfest 2022 will take place on July 1 and 2.
