Bury St Edmunds charity Mencap holds fund-raiser and recruitment day

A charity supporting people with learning disabilities has been raising funds for a new accessible play area.

The charity Mencap held a stall with live music from local musicians and food in the town centre, February 2.

The event was to recruit support workers and volunteers, raise awareness and raise money for a new play area at their care home in Drummond Court, Bury St Edmunds.

Casey Goodchild, assistant service manager at the society’s care home said: "We wanted to raise awareness of the service because a lot of people don’t know we exist.

"We’re also looking at building a park area on site because there is no disabled parks in Bury St Edmunds, no wheelchair friendly swings – so our wheelchair users are going to be able to enjoy that.

"We're also recruiting as well. During the pandemic, things got very hard in all care aspects, so we're hoping to recruit some more people and more volunteers to work with the guys."

The charity currently has no volunteers within the service at the moment, so more people are greatly needed.

"Ideally, we need volunteers for days out and trips so that we have the extra staff to help us take the guys out so they can have some fun."

It is hoped the charity will be be able to host more fund-raising events throughout the year to raise the £1,000-£2,000 needed to build the play area.
