There are various givens in life: a buttered slice of bread will always fall butter down in the kitchen, your mobile always runs out of charge when you most need it and you’ll always forget an anniversary (once).

Then there’s the A14. Use it between 7.30 and 9am or 4.30-6pm on a weekday and you will get held up.

So news of a campaign to press for improvements from Exning in the west all the way past Bury St Edmunds to the east coast are welcome.

Businesses in Norfolk breathed a sign of relief when the ‘new’ A11 opened earlier this year.

As for the A14, I agree that the section from Cambridge to Spittals Interchange at Huntingdon is perilous but our focus must be on the section which runs through the heart of Suffolk and which is in need of urgent attention.

Whichever party gets the keys to Number 10 after the election, we need a pledge for cash to come our way and the candidates on our doorsteps need to take that message away.
