I remember that dreadful night in summer 2012 when Cupola House went up in flames.

The pictures the next day showed the full extent of the horrible damage which swept through the historic building.

Since then, weeks, months and years have passed with work going on behind clad scaffolding, quietly and without fuss.

Bury St Edmunds is a town which prides itself for maintaining and preserving many historic buildings and sites – Cupola House adds to that attraction and magic.

Inevitably, timescales have had to be revised and let’s not mention the cost. But the good news is that August 2015 is currently the date when we should get to see inside the building once more.

Reporter Bethany Whymark had a special look round this week and by all accounts, the new building will be well worth the wait.

History is something we must fight to preserve and I take my hat off to the workers who are realising the dream of Cupola House rising from the ashes.
