XR Lab in Bury St Edmunds hosts launch event for RevolveLabs’ healthcare training technology

A tech firm, a college group and the NHS have joined forces to help support sufferers of chronic pain by developing some innovative training programmes for health professionals.

The technology was showcased during a launch event that took place at the University Professional Development Centre, run by Eastern Education Group (EEG), in Bury St Edmunds.

During this occasion, representatives from RevolveLabs presented their new training concepts via state-of-the-art virtual reality (VR) educational technology in the Extended Reality (XR) Lab.

A group of around 50 people made up of businesses, training providers, doctors, nurses and surgeons, then got to experience the technology via VR training sessions.

The immersive experiences have been created to give all health professionals experiences that will give them a greater understanding and more empathy towards chronic pain sufferers.

More immersive content is currently being created by RevolveLabs and partners in relation to the subject of dementia.

The technology will also be used by learners who are studying on health related programmes with the Eastern Education Group to help support their journeys into industry.

Virginia Planas, strategic and NHS healthcare partnership manager for EEG, said: “It’s all about working together and teaching in a different way and it’s great to be part of this. This is just the beginning.”

Tom Lloyd, executive director for skills, innovation and strategic partnership for EEG, added: “We are proud to be part of a project that is helping to transform healthcare in this country.”

Hamish Mackenzie, founder of RevolveLabs, said the facilities at the XR Lab were ‘top level’ and added: “It’s impressive what they have achieved here - and we are looking to work with young people and apprentices via this project.”

He said they had created a series of simulated scenes where you progress through a patient journey, getting to take the perspective of both the health professional and the patient.

David Cargill, a GP in Stowmarket who has helped bring the partnership together, said: “I’ve been blown away by the content that has been created that will support patients in this region.”
