Environment Agency issues statement over mystery Bury St Edmunds humming noise that resident says is ‘back with a vengeance’

Environmental officers ‘have not been able to substantiate’ a mystery humming noise that is negatively affecting residents living in and around a Suffolk town.

Residents living in the Bury St Edmunds area have been complaining to the Environment Agency about a droning, resonating humming sound, with one person on the Moreton Hall estate describing it as ‘beyond bearable’.

A number of people have also been taking it upon themselves to investigate the noise - including at night – and have been making recordings and videos.

In response to a request for comment, a spokesperson for the Environment Agency said the agency had received multiple reports regarding a particular business, in Bury St Edmunds, and all the complaints had been put to the site.

However, agency officers ‘have not been able to substantiate any humming noise coming from the site at present’.

The spokesperson said they had also received three reports of noise for another business in the area - a permitted site.

“We have put the complaints to them and are waiting for feedback from the site. Environment Agency officers have also been out to the area but have not been able to substantiate any humming noise to date,” they added.

Linda Barnard, from Rougham, just outside Bury, is among those to have complained about the noise.

She said it had been much quieter from the Friday afternoon, but it was ‘back with a vengeance’.

She and others have contacted the Environment Agency again.

“It was bliss for us all for those few days of quiet!” she added.

Residents, including Ms Barnard, have complained about it being difficult to sleep with the noise.
