Extra apartments could be created at a supported living facility in Bury St Edmunds as it looks to expand.

The Orbit Group has submitted plans for alterations at 11 Cullum Road to create six ‘extra care’ units.

The site has 32 one and two-bedroom apartments for older people who wish to retain their independence, with a care team on hand.

A planning statement said the application was being submitted alongside separate proposals for a two-storey extension to the south of the existing building to create 10 more extra care units, resulting in 16 in total.

It said: “In order to enhance the service there is a need to increase the number of units to help viability and also support the local authority with elderly affordable care provision within this location.”

The six apartments will be for affordable rent.

The development includes the provision of an additional car park to the south of the existing parking area.

To provide a vehicle access to the new car park, five spaces would be lost from the current provision but there would be a net increase of six extra parking spaces.
