Bury St Edmunds Splash Out to be tackled by family trio all to raise money for East Anglia's Children's Hospices
Three generations of the same family have decided to take the plunge and sign up for a water-themed fund-raising event next month.
Eight-year-old Edward Cottington will be joined by his dad, Lee, and grandad, Graham, at East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) Splash Out! on May 15.
The event will be taking place at Nowton Park, in Bury St Edmunds, and in 2021 more than 800 people participated.
The trio, alongside other participants, will have to tackle the 5k course with inflatable obstacles including wobbly floating bridges and ball dodges or the shorter 2.5k for children.
Edward, a pupil at Norton CEVC Primary School, was a driving force for the trio signing up as Graham had prostate cancer and his mum, Fran, is currently receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer.
Fran, a dinner lady at Edward's school, said: "We’re incredibly proud of Edward. As a family, we’ve had experience of cancer and he’s been on the periphery, which is why he’s so keen to support such a worthy cause.
"He first heard about the Splash Out! after seeing an advert while walking with my mum in Nowton Park.
"He jumped at the chance and thought it sounded fun. The three of them are really looking forward to it.
"In the meantime, he’s enjoying raising money and keeps asking me about our fundraising page. He loves seeing the total go up," she added.
Hannah Forbester, EACH events fundraiser, said: "We’re so pleased and excited to have a team of three generations joining us in Bury.
"What a lovely story and this is why we love running events of this nature, so everyone can get involved.
"Last year’s event was a huge success - a family-friendly, exciting and fun-packed day enjoyed by adults and children alike.
"The course is set up to be a great one again this year and I really hope they’re looking forward to it."
