Bury St Edmunds sweet treats shop Crumbs, run by Queens Bar and Grill owner Ben Hutton, will open with festive favourites this weekend
A bevy of festive favourites will be on offer this weekend as a sweet treats shop will open its doors alongside a town's Christmas market.
Goods ranging from truffle snowmen, reindeer cookies to Christmas puddings will adorn the counters of Crumbs, in Higher Baxter Street, Bury St Edmunds, at its grand opening on Friday, in addition to its regular stock.
Owner Ben Hutton, who runs Queens Bar and Grill in Churchgate Street, said a variety of gifts and goodies will be on offer to mark the occasion.
The plan has always been for the shop to open with the Christmas market at the cathedral, which runs from Thursday until Saturday and is part of a weekend of festive activities.
Ben said: “Our plan from day one was to open during the Christmas period with festive treats, so we figured we’d open during the market to reach as many people as possible.
“The town centre is buzzing throughout the weekend, so it seems obvious to us to open during a period where Bury attracts people from all over.
“In addition to the sweet treats, we’ll also offer flavoured milkshakes and coffee as it’s likely to be a bit nippy.”
For the foreseeable future, the shop will be open from Thursday to Sunday every week, with the option to open on Wednesday should demand be high enough.
He noted they needed a store of a manageable size to allow people to buy desserts in smaller batches, with a few tables inside for those who wish to stay for coffee.
However, it will primarily serve as a takeaway.
The shop - which Ben described as ‘very pink’ - has been undergoing a makeover since he bought it earlier this year.
Crumbs was originally set up as an online-only brand specialising in custom cheesecakes.
These remain its signature, alongside themed desserts, with the owner hoping demand for baked goods will remain high throughout the holiday season.
Going into the new year, he hopes to expand the range of offerings, but ensuring the detail it prides itself on remains the same.
Afternoon tea could also be an option down the line.
All desserts will be baked at Queens and delivered to the shop.
His team will also still be based there, but he hopes to hire a few people to help him manage the store.
Ben added: “For now, our focus will be very much on the shopfront itself, and drumming up as many customers as we can.
“I think people may be surprised when they walk in, as it looks a little simple from the outside, but inside that little bit extra.
“Ultimately, what we want is to be a proper dessert shop and to offer something you can’t really get anywhere else in town.”
