Fire at Nissan garage in Bury St Edmunds not being treated as suspicious

Staff at a car dealership where a fire broke out last week are dealing with the situation ‘calmly and professionally’, the manager has said.

Firefighters were called to Hammond Nissan in Lamdin Road at around 4am on Thursday, October 4, after residents living nearby were woken by the sound of explosions and alarms.

Around 21 cars, a section of wooden fencing and storage unit were destroyed but the cost of the damage is currently being assessed by insurers.

David Kindred, general sales manager, said: “We are calmly and professionally trying to get through the situation as best we can.

“We are working our way through everything and it is being handled properly. But for now it is business as normal - we will carry on serving customers and it’s nothing to worry about.”

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and Suffolk Police, said: “An investigation into the fire carried out by the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service has resulted in the cause being undetermined. Following enquiries by Suffolk Police, the fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time.”
