Risby fire update: Crews remained at The Highwaymans overnight

Crews from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service remained at the scene of a major fire in Risby overnight.

Eighteen units from around the county, and a further three from over borders, were called to The Highwaymans at around 6.20pm last night (Thursday, June 25).

The guest house was well ablaze and it took around three hours for the service to call a stop to the fire - which they did at 9.15pm.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said crews remained at the incident overnight. They have used two hose reels, four jets, one water bowser and three thermal imaging cameras and 12 breathing apparatus.

Crews from Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill, Cambridge, Wickhambrook, Ixworth, Mildenhall and Newmarket were at the scene.

There was also support from the Cambridgeshire fire service.

A spokesman for the fire and rescue service said: "Approximately half of the first floor of the three story building was aflame.

"The building had already been evacuated upon arrival and crews assisted two people suffering from light smoke inhalation on the scene until the ambulance service arrived.

"Crews sectorised the building and used various equipment over a sustained period to subdue the fire and any additional hotspots.

"Due to the length of the incident relief crews were sent to relieve those who attended the incident towards the beginning."
