Firefighters from Bury St Edmunds, Hadleigh, Sudbury, Ipswich and more called to huge five-house fire in Hengrave




Emergency services are battling a huge five-house inferno in a Suffolk village that has been raging overnight.

Fire crews were alerted to the incident in Bury Road, Hengrave, at 12.48am this morning, while police were called in at 1.18am, following reports that a row of thatched cottages went up in flames.

About 14 engines attended, including teams from Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Sudbury, Hadleigh and Mildenhall.

There is currently a road closure in place on the A1101 while the fire is fought, with both lanes blocked off.

Police have revealed how the fire was suspected to have started.

A nearby resident has described being evacuated from her home and standing in the street watching flames engulf the row of five thatched cottages.

Residents were evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution, although no injuries have been reported.

In addition, the Salvation Army Emergency Response Unit was there, providing refreshments to the fire service.
