Former Bury St Edmunds school pupil's team wins University Challenge
Most people would be happy winning their local pub quiz night, but one former Bury St Edmunds pupil has gone much further.
Gilbert Jackson, who used to go to St Benedict's Catholic School, is currently in his third year at Imperial College, London, studying for a masters in Chemistry.
Last night, he was one of a team of four students from the university who made it to the grand final of University Challenge where they beat Reading University by just 10 points.
Gilbert took to social media after the episode aired on the BBC to share his excitement at the result.
"I can’t express the joy and honour I feel from the whole experience," he said.
"My team mates are some of the most amazing people I’ve had the privilege to meet.
"They hold a special place in my heart and I shall continue to update you all on our museum pilgrimages."
The current headteacher of St Benedict's, Imogen Senior, also took to social media to share her congratulations.
"Amazing performance from Imperial. So impressed," she said.
Gilbert spoke to SuffolkNews last September after appearing on the show for the first time saying it was something he had always wanted to do.
University Challenge, which first aired in 1962, is hosted by Jeremy Paxman.
