Free family fun day and summer activities return to Bury St Edmunds
Families can look forward to a summer of free activities and outdoor fun as a popular fun day is set to return.
The Family Fun Day will take place on Friday, August 8, at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre with activities for all ages including archery, climbing, mountain biking, axe throwing, fire-lighting and outdoor cooking while younger children can enjoy a bouncy castle and free ice cream.
Hosted by Abbeycroft, in partnership with Bury St Edmunds Town Council, the event is part of The Great Summer Get Together — a wider initiative running throughout the school holidays offering free activities to eligible families across Bury.
Cllr Donna Higgins, town mayor, said: “Having noted that so many residents were appreciative of this initiative last year, we decided to commission Abbeycroft to run another round of activities for our youngsters this year.
“The Fun Day will be, once again, the highlight of the summer, but remember there are lots of swimming sessions for the whole family too and we hope that Bury St Edmunds families will have the best Bury summer ever.”
Funded by the town council, the programme is open to children and young people living in postcodes IP32 and IP33, although some postcode exceptions may apply. Families are encouraged to check their eligibility and apply online.
In addition to the Family Fun Day, the programme includes free swimming sessions at the leisure centre, full-day Adventure Days running from 8.30am to 4.30pm and pop-up activity sessions across the town.
While all activities are free, spaces are limited and must be booked in advance.

Frank Carn-Pryor, outdoor education manager at Abbeycroft, said: “We’re grateful to the town council for funding the initiative again this year, which allows us to make it easier for families to stay active and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
“We had a brilliant response last year and we’re so pleased to be able to bring it all back with even more opportunities for families to get involved and spend some time together outdoors.”
