Sponsored bike ride at the Flintknappers pub in Brandon for Bury St Edmunds mum Chloe Chase and son Jaylen diagnosed with leukaemia raises over £2k

A sponsored exercise bike ride event at a pub helped to raise over £2,000 for a nine-year-old after he was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Chloe Chase, 29, of Bury St Edmunds, was recently told her son Jaylen had leukaemia and in aid of the duo, a sponsored bike ride was organised at the The Flintknappers pub in Brandon on Saturday, November 18.

A GoFundMe fund-raiser to help with food, bills and rent has also been launched for the pair which has received a total of £2,152 so far.

The landlady of The Flintknappers, Jo Day, has known Chloe since she was young and organised the bike ride at the weekend, with the final figure from the occasion set to reach £2,500 by the end of the week as the last donations come in.

Unfortunately, Chloe and Jaylen were unable to attend the event as he had to go to hospital, but Chloe’s mum, Hayley Chase, and Jaylen’s great nan, Heather Whymark, were able to turn up.

“It was honestly great fun, a massive success and I’m so grateful to everyone that donated,” Jo said.

“Obviously, Chloe was disappointed and gutted that they couldn’t come in the end, but she wanted to thank everyone and it was lovely to see her mum and Jaylen’s great nan.

“It was a really good atmosphere inside and everyone enjoyed the day.”

Jo added that she enjoyed doing an auction while pedalling on the exercise bike and her husband, Charlton, played pool with a broom handle which was entertaining for onlookers.

Professional boxer Tommy Fletcher was in attendance as Charlton has a scaffolding firm that is one of the sponsors for ‘The Norfolk Nightmare’.

Both the boxer and his mum, Clare, clocked up 50km each on the exercise bike and Tommy was able to have a chat with Jaylen on FaceTime as well.

The raffle prizes were also popular with offers of haircuts and wine, to a room for the night at The Bull in Barton Mills with a two course meal for two.

Jo is hoping to get both Jaylen and Chloe back to the pub on Sunday, November 26, to present a cheque to the pair and to make up for missing out on the bike ride event.
