Heartbroken Bury St Edmunds mum pays tribute to ‘one of a kind’ daughter Kiki Wright after battle with rare bone cancer Ewing sarcoma
A heartbroken mum has paid tribute to her ‘one of a kind’ daughter who has died aged 11 following a battle with a rare bone cancer.
Kiki Wright, of Bury St Edmunds, had been battling Ewing sarcoma since her diagnosis at the start of 2024 and was left with a 50/50 survival rate after the bone cancer spread from her hip to chest.
Despite being given the all clear in November, Kiki was rediagnosed in May following a routine scan.
She died on June 12, shortly before her 12th birthday on Saturday.
Kiki’s mum Kat Wright, 35, who also has a 13-year-old son, Reggie, said: “I feel heartbroken, numb and lost. It just doesn’t seem real at the moment.
“Kiki was the bravest and nothing fazed her. She was such an inspiring girl. I asked her how she was feeling about her relapse and she replied ‘I just have to deal with it’.
“She never knew it was terminal, I couldn't let her live out the rest of her time she had in fear. She really was one of a kind and brightened up every room.
”The house is so quiet now and she has left a massive void already. She will forever be in our thoughts and will be hugely missed by everyone who knew her.”
After fears her leg would have to be amputated, Kiki endured six weeks of radiotherapy in London last summer and had 14 chemotherapy sessions over the space of nine months, before she was given the all clear on November 12.
She was then admitted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital on May 9 after an X-ray scan showed fluid had built up between the lungs and ribcage.
The cancer had metastasized from the primary site in her hip to her lungs.
“Kiki was upset that she didn’t even get to have one year in remission,” Kat said.
“She dealt with it all amazingly and did her best to not let it affect her.
“I am so incredibly proud of how she wore a smile throughout. She really was so strong.
“Reggie was really upset as they shared a bedroom together. He's been busy surrounding himself with friends which is a good thing.”
Kiki enjoyed spending time with her friends and loved days out with her mum, including a trip to Egypt together in December.
Kat’s niece Tera Burton started a GoFundMe last year to help with special days out for the Bury family, including trips to the beach and Legoland, that received more than £4,000 in donations.
Kat added that she was very grateful to all the kind wishes, prayers and support that had been given to both her and Kiki.
