Helen Mason, Slimming World consultant in Bury St Edmunds, shares weight loss journey after completing Race For Life 2025

A woman who donned pink for a cancer charity event is sharing her weight loss journey in the hope of inspiring others.

Helen Mason, now a Slimming World consultant based in Bury St Edmunds, has marked a major milestone in her weight loss journey by completing this year’s Race for Life event six stone lighter than when she first took part over a decade ago.

She joined hundreds of others at Nowton Park on Sunday to take part in the charity race which raised £70,000 for Cancer Research UK.

For Helen, the event held special significance as she described ‘huffing and puffing’ her way around the course during Race for Life 2014.

“This year, I whizzed around at a very fast walk, confidently and easily,” she said. “I enjoyed every moment.”

Helen first joined Slimming World in 2016 and said it was a ‘life-changing choice’ which helped her lose six stone in 18 months.

She credits her success to the support of her Slimming World group and the programme’s focus on real, sustainable behaviour change.

She said: “With the power of group and the Slimming World programme, I was able to achieve my goal.

“I’ve sustained that weight loss ever since by eating real food, attending group and making a few simple healthy habit changes.”

Her transformation was also fuelled by regular physical activity which she began with walks around Nowton Park.

“At first my knees hurt and I often felt breathless, but I didn’t give up,” she said. “Gradually, I built up stamina and confidence until I could sustain a good walking pace around the whole circumference of the park.

“Nowadays, long walks and swimming are just part of my weekly routine — and I love that.”

Helen then trained as a Slimming World consultant in 2023 and now runs a group at Southgate Community Centre in Bury every Friday morning.

This year, she completed Race for Life alongside 15 of her own Slimming World members.

Helen hopes her story will inspire others to take the first step toward a healthier and more active lifestyle.
