A Suffolk high street restaurant is set to close after 40 years with plans submitted to turn it back into a home.

Theobald's Restaurant, in Ixworth High Street, near Bury St Edmunds, is to be turned back into a residential dwelling if permission is granted by West Suffolk Council.

The owners of the Grade II listed building currently occupy the first floor and part of the ground floor for their own accommodation.

They are proposing to undo the works in the 16th century property that were first carried out when the restaurant began, by removing the bar, main lobby area and the customer toilets.

They also are requesting permission for the construction of new access gates for the property and for a back store building to be removed.

A heritage statement said: "We do not believe that the works will have an adverse impact upon the historic fabric or the character of the listed building.

"The proposed works will create a good quality family dwelling which will secure its long term future."
