St Edmundsbury Cathedral, in Bury St Edmunds, holds Cathedrals at Night: History Comes Alive event




History was brought to life in Bury St Edmunds on Friday at a special St Edmundsbury Cathedral event.

Cathedrals at Night: History Comes Alive was a free evening event offering the chance to experience the cathedral after hours.

Guided interactions with historical figures, including Abbot Anselm, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Jocelyn de Brakelond and an abbey cook, all played by members of Irving Stage Company.

Visitors enjoyed interactive crafts, storytelling and activities including LEGO, books from the ancient library, mulled wine and hot chocolate.

Cathedral at Night concluded with a choir performance of Compline, an ancient night prayer sung by monks.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral’s visitor experience manager, Sarah Friswell, said: “It always feels special to open the doors after dark and do something a little different for our community.

“This year we blended history, heritage and creativity in a novel way by encouraging visitors to interact with the town’s historical figures and hear their stories.”
