A popular arts venue in Stowmarket is looking for 'centre champions' to help out behind the scenes.

The John Peel Centre has launched an appeal for volunteers who can perform tasks from putting up posters to pulling pints at sold-out shows and even sound engineering at the mixing desk.

Iain Lowery, the centre's programming and communications manager, said volunteering could be a good stepping stone for those interested in pursuing a career in the live entertainment sector.

“A ‘love for the live’ goes a long way," he said.

"When people start walking through the door and the room starts to fill up with a buzzy atmosphere it makes all the hard work feel totally worth it.”

“It’s always the best feeling when, at the end of the night, people come up to you and tell you how much they enjoyed the night and how good they thought the acts were.”

Pursuing a career in the industry can be a challenge but Iain said voluntary roles are a great way to bulk out a CV before trying to land a job.

Not only will the 'centre champions' work within the local music community, there is also the opportunity to explore working on a variety of shows including theatre, poetry and comedy.

The venue is named after legendary Radio One DJ John Peel, who was well known for discovering and championing new music.

Iain added: “The John Peel Centre is a real asset to Stowmarket and Suffolk in general as it provides audiences with the opportunity to see some high profile national and international touring acts as well as providing up-and-coming artists with a space to cut their teeth on the live circuit.”

“In reality, the centre wouldn’t exist without the time, expertise and dedication that volunteers offer to the centre.”

If you would like to volunteer at the John Peel Centre, send an email to iain@johnpeelcentre.co.uk or drop in to the centre in Church Walk, Stowmarket to learn more about what you can do to support the venue and become a centre champion.
