An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a former Bury St Edmunds resident.

David Andrew Cauldwell’s body was located by a friend at the bottom of a steep wooded area between the end of Petitor Road and Petitor Beach in Torquay shortly after 8am on May 25.

The 39-year-old had been reported missing three days earlier and the discovery followed extensive searches by his friends, the police and partner agencies.

The former County Upper School pupil, whose funeral is expected to take place in Torquay today, is thought to have moved to the seaside town in the late 1990s.

At the inquest’s opening on May 27, Torbay and South Devon coroner Ian Arrow said David’s father, John Cauldwell, a retired company director from Bury, had formally identified the body of his son as being that which lay in the Chapel of Rest at Torbay Hospital.

Mr Arrow said David, a self-employed building contractor, was single and lived in a flat in Thurlow Road, Torquay.

David’s cause of death was given as multiple injuries. It is not being treated as suspicious.
