Shrimpy from EastEnders spotted in Bury St Edmunds market by fan
A BBC soap actor who has appeared in nearly 500 episodes of EastEnders was spotted at the market in Bury St Edmunds.
Ben Champniss, who has been playing market-stall holder Shrimpy since 2014, was seen near Superdrug on Cornhill on Saturday at 12:45pm by fan Mandy Porter.
Mandy had come into town with her family to pick up some new glasses from Specsavers – and she could not believe her eyes when she saw someone she had been watching for years on TV.
“It felt like bumping into an old friend,” she said, “which is really strange because we had obviously never met, but I just felt like I knew him because we watch him all the time.
“I just couldn’t believe it. At first I couldn’t place him, but I just had a feeling I knew him from somewhere.
“Then it hit me – ‘oh my god, that’s Shrimpy’.

“He was so lovely in person when we asked for a picture and he even wished me a good day. It completely made my day.”
During his visit to Bury St Edmunds, Ben Champniss also enjoyed a Sunday roast at The Cadogan in Ingham and praised his beer from The Brewshed.
According to EastEnders Wiki, Shrimpy has appeared in 483 episodes of the show and has had two ‘doof doof’ endings in 10 years of being on the show.
