Jade Skill and Chris Curran, of Bury St Edmunds, prepare to Brave the Shave with upcoming event at Greene King Social Club

A pair of friends are gearing up to Brave the Shave with one shaving her hair and the other his beard to raise money for charity.

Jade Skill and Chris Curran, both of Bury St Edmunds, are competing to see who can raise the most funds for their chosen causes ahead of their shave event on Saturday, October 19 at the Greene King Social Club.

Jade, who lives at Marham Park, works for St Edmunds Hospital as a operating department practitioner (ODP) and has decided to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK in honour of her granddad and friends affected by the disease.

She said: "It was my birthday in February and my friends were curling my hair and they joked about how damaged it was from all the bleaching.

“So I said, 'you know what, I’m going to shave it off.'

“They doubted I’d actually do it, so I decided I was definitely going to do it in October for the Brave the Shave campaign.

"I’m quite a spontaneous person, so my friends were surprised, but to me, it’s just hair—it’ll grow back, right?

“I’ve always wanted to raise money for charity, and after my granddad passed away quite recently—not from prostate cancer, though he did have it—I just felt inspired to support the cause.

“I am getting quite excited for it now, but also quite nervous.”

Chris, a driver and dray operative at Greene King, is getting ready to part with his beloved beard to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

He said: “Anyone who knows me will tell you my love for my beard is massive.

“It’s an obsession of mine — you could even say my beard is my personality, so for me to part with it will be very hard.

“We have all had someone we know that has been affected by the horror of cancer.

“So, MacMillian is the one for me.”

So far, the duo has raised more than £800 for their charities and to donate yourself, you can click here for Jade’s page or click here for Chris’ page.

The event starts at 3pm on Saturday and costs £10 per person which includes a charity donation, a burger or a hotdog, a glass of wine or a pint as well as a tombola ticket.

There will also be a pool tournament, a darts tournament and the big shave is to take place at 6.30pm.
