Chris Ingham previews the best jazz gigs around the eastern region this week (July 31-August 6).

KEVIN FLANAGAN (The Bell Inn, Clare, 8pm, £10). Details: www.jazz-nights.com) The virtuosic altoist of Rebop returns to his first instrument of tenor saxophone with Colchester-based guitarist Simon Hurley, Bern Hodgkins (bass) and Roger Odell (drums), plus an opening set from singer Larraine Odell.

ZOE GILBY (Hotel Hatfield, Lowestoft, 8.30pm, £7/£6) North East-based jazz singer with a growing reputation for intrepid interpretations of adventurous material. With husband Andy Champion on bass plus Phil Brooke (guitar) and Brian McAllister (drums).

ANDY BOWIE QUARTET (Tram Shed, Cambridge, 8.30, free) Tenor saxophone-playing philosophy professor leads a quartet presenting a connoisseur’s choice from the modern jazz repertoire.

MONDAY, AUGUST 3 - JAZZ JAM(The Fat Cat Brewery Tap, Norwich, 8.30pm, free. Details: jazzjam.org.uk) Established and friendly jam session led by bassist Brendan Youngs and guitarist Lee Vasey. All instrumentalists and singers welcome for sitting in.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 6 - SOLE BAY JAZZ BAND (Maltings Pavilion, Ditchingham, 8pm, free. Info: 01986 896143) Residency for established and popular Dixieland band, featuring Ray Simmons (trumpet), Tim Densham (clarinet/sax), Ron Hockett (clarinet/saxophone), Alan Cugnoni (banjo/guitar), Tony Jullings (bass) and Craig Hipperson (drums).

FRIDAY, AUGUST 7 - ROBERT HABERMANN (Stoke By Nayland Hotel, 8pm, £15. Details: www.fleecejazz.org.uk) Highly-regarded cabaret vocalist in an intimate evening of songs by George Gershwin with pianist Trevor Brown.
