Delight for Bury St Edmunds runner Paul Cryer after securing bronze medal in ultramarathon at British Trail Running Championships
A runner is delighted after securing a bronze medal in his age category in an ultramarathon event as part of a national championships.
Paul Cryer, of Bury St Edmunds, completed an ultramarathon on Saturday as part of the British Trail Running Championships 2025.
The 41-year-old said he enjoyed taking part in the 20th edition of the Ridgeway Challenge - an 86-mile race that follows the entire length of the historic Ridgeway National Trail, from Ivinghoe Beacon in Hertfordshire to Avebury in Wiltshire.
Not only did he receive a bronze medal in the age category of 40 to 44, but Paul also finished fourth overall out of 250 people.
He finished the race in 16 hours and 26 minutes.
“I was very happy with it and very pleased considering there were some top runners in the field that I’ve come across before at other events,” Paul said.
“For me the hardest part of the race was the heat during the day hours, getting up to around 25 degrees with little to no shade at times.
“I have to thank my partner Fleur for being an amazing crew for me all day and night.
“She followed me around making sure I was fully fueled and hydrated even in the early hours of Sunday morning.”
Paul, who has previously raised £1,200 for Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Services (ADSS) after taking on the Winter on the Downs 100-mile ultramarathon in December, is not done yet this year.
His next race is the Centurion Autumn 100 on October 18.
The event is a 100-mile continuous trail race based in the twinned villages of Goring and Streatley on the River Thames.
He will be joined by running partner Mitchell Bragg-Hart, who will be pacing the last 25 miles with him.
