Junior doctors’ five-day strike action to cause disruption in Suffolk

Junior doctors in Suffolk are preparing for a five-day strike just days before the General Election.

The NHS in Suffolk and north east Essex is urging the public to be prepared for the strikes which will take place between 7am on Thursday, June 27 24 to 7am on Tuesday, July 2.

Dr Ruth Bushaway, associate medical director of NHS Suffolk and north east Essex Integrated Care Board, is urging people to still use the hospital for emergencies during this period.

She said: “We urge people to do all they can to help during what is bound to be a busy and challenging time.

“No-one should put off seeking help when they need it, and the hospitals’ emergency (A&E) departments will remain open throughout. It is vitally important though that only those people with the most serious, life-threatening conditions go there.

“If it is not an emergency then please use the other options available to you.”

Dr Bushaway suggested that anyone who is unsure on what to do or where to go should call NHS 111 to get the right help and advice.

The mental health crisis support will continue to be available 24/7 by calling 111 or visiting NHS 111 Online.

Local pharmacies are also a helpful source of advice and no appointment is needed to speak to the pharmacist.

GP practices will also remain open as usual during the strike action and any appointments should be attended as normal.

Dr Bushaway added: “There is no need to call to check if your appointment is still going ahead.

“You will be contacted directly if your appointment needs to be rearranged.”
