Lakenheath school backed by High Court

Lakenheath Parish Council's bid to overturn planning permission for a primary school has been quashed in the High Court.

Suffolk County Council granted itself approval for the 420-place primary and 30-place pre-school in October last year.

This is to facilitate the 660 homes set to be built in the village.

While agreeing a school was needed, the parish objected to it being built under the flightpath to nearby RAF Lakenheath.

But today (Friday, April 5) their judicial review was rejected.

It is understood the High Court found in favour of the county council because the authority had surveyed a number of different sites and interests of pupils had been considered.

The parish council is set to pay costs of around £15,000 - which had been limited by judge John Howell QC.

A spokesperson for Suffolk County Council said: “We welcome the High Court’s decision in our favour and now wish to continue making preparations for future education provision in Lakenheath."

Lakenheath Parish Council declined to make a comment and will hold an extraordinary council meeting on April 10 at 6.30pm inside the Methodist Chapel Hall.
