Rattlesden and District Community Shop wins a top spot in Nextdoor awards

A small community shop has won a national award.

The Rattlesden and District Community Shop, in Rattlesden, Suffolk, has been named Local Business of the Year in the Good Neighbourhood Awards, run by Nextdoor, the neighbourhood website, which became hugely popular during lockdown.

The shop is entirely run by volunteers and is a non-profit community interest company.

Many of the shop volunteers are retired and were considered vulnerable throughout the pandemic, yet ensured the shop continued to operate.

As a result, they set up a delivery service for those residents of the village and wider community who were forced to isolate or shelter for many weeks, whilst a rural coffee caravan was brought to life to act as a meeting point for elderly and isolated residents also.

The shop won the award after being nominated by Rattlesden residents.

The awards saw almost 5,000 entries for individuals, groups and businesses that have supported their communities over the past year.

These were from acts of kindness and local initiatives for surviving lockdown to efforts in making neighbourhoods more sustainable for the future.

Rattlesden and District Community Shop volunteer, Camilla Keeling said: “Winning the Nextdoor award is a huge boost.

“It’s wonderful to have the recognition of the work all the volunteers put into keeping the shelves full and the shifts covered.

“We are so fortunate to have such a fabulous local community.”

Roisin O’Neill, head of community UK at Nextdoor said: “Reading through the thousands of entries we received for this year’s awards has shown us just how strong the sense of community is in the UK.

"The pandemic has reminded people of how important our neighbourhoods are to us and that kindness and support will always be at the heart of the British public and we’re thrilled to reveal the Rattlesden and District Community Shop as this year’s Local Business of the Year.’’
