In today's nostalgia we go back to 1997 when youngsters received welcome renovations to their club thanks to servicemen.

Members of the 48th Supply Squadron had been giving up their own time to decorate and kit out Lakenheath Youth Club in Eriswell Road.

American servicemen from Lakenheath and British civilians clubbed together to donate equipment including a microwave and fridge for the kitchen.

Youth leader Steve Davill, who also worked at the base as an MoD manager, said the wooden hut was in urgent need of renovations but the amount of work was far more than he expected.

"We had been talking about decorating it for the last six months. It was run down and it needed redecorated and furnished.

"Everyone has given their time for nothing," said Mr Davill.

Not content with merely doing up the inside, the troops had also been busy landscaping the outside.

"They have even given books and toys. The children really are going to reap the benefits," Mr Davill added.
